MP Khalid BuAnaq and four other members of the Bahraini parliament have submitted a formal proposal seeking a review of current regulations governing visiting surgeons. The motion aims to establish stricter oversight mechanisms for medical professionals practicing in the country on a temporary basis. By requesting an audit of existing licensing and supervision protocols, the lawmakers intend to ensure that visiting doctors maintain consistent standards of care for local patients. The proposal focuses on the administrative framework surrounding these short-term medical assignments to enhance regulatory control. Parliament members are expected to debate the motion during upcoming legislative sessions to determine if changes to the current medical oversight rules are required.

Ensuring Patient Safety and Accountability

Accountability for medical errors committed by visiting surgeons forms a central pillar of the proposed parliamentary review. Lawmakers seek to establish clear mechanisms that allow patients to pursue legal claims or seek compensation even after a visiting professional has departed from Bahrain. MP Mohammed Al Maarafi argued that medical responsibility must extend beyond the initial procedure, stating, "The operation does not end at the operating theatre door. It needs follow-up care."

The scope of this review encompasses the entire recruitment and licensing process for temporary medical staff. Authorities would conduct rigorous checks on the qualifications, professional experience, and specific medical specialisms of visiting surgeons before they are granted permission to practice. This administrative oversight aims to verify that every visiting doctor possesses the necessary credentials to perform specialized tasks within the country.

Beyond individual qualifications, the proposal mandates an assessment of the legal and professional obligations held by hospitals and the doctors themselves. The review will examine the current adequacy of medical liability insurance policies to ensure they provide sufficient coverage for local patients. Additionally, the proposal evaluates existing arrangements for continued treatment once a visiting surgeon leaves. MP Mohammed Al Maarafi questioned the current standards of these facilities, asking, "Have these hospitals taken into account the procedures and guarantees needed after surgery? I believe not." By investigating these duties, parliament members intend to close gaps in patient protection and clarify the responsibilities of all parties involved in temporary medical assignments.
